Heatherwood Diary 1950 to 1952

A number of parties were held at the hospital by various groups TOC.H , & Scouts.

An entertainment was given by the Dollybrook Concert Party, Slough, with Maurice Denham, of radio, film and stage fame as the guest artist. At the close of the entertainment Maurice Denham toured the children's ward and signed many autographs.

The Bertram mills circus visited the hospital.

A number of children were taken to Bognor Regis for the day.

An exhibition boxing match was performed on one of the wards.

A new name of the hospital was used in staff adverts this year(1950)
" Heatherwood orthopaedic hospital".

Four scouts were taken to Windsor for the yearly march past.

At Christmas Ex-Service patients at Heatherwood Hospital had received cigarettes, writing pads and pencils.

  • Toc H.Party

    The third party to be given by Toc H.Windsor, was especially for the children of Heatherwood Hospital on Saturday.

    It began in the boys' ward with community singing, lead by Don Paxton, a local Band leader, and was followed by a conjuring performance by Ken Hawes, another local artist. In the meantime the girls and younger children enjoyed a meal which included trifles, meringues, eclairs and fancy cakes, etc. This was followed by community singing and a performance by the conjuror. The boys then had their Christmas tea.

    The distribution of sweets from New Zealand. crackers. tangerines and apples was the next item on the programme, after which Father Christmas. impersonated by Mr.Goldsworthy Snr gave each child a present valued at 15s or more. These gifts were supplemented by the adults from other wards. who made 20 lovely felt toys.

    Only seven members of Toc H. organised this successful party.
    Gifts were received from various people in Ascot, Windsor and New Zealand.

  • Hospital's Scouts' Party

    The Heatherwood Hospital Scout Group celebrated their 23rd birthday on Saturday with a tea and cinema show.

    The celebrations were held in Ward One, and the Scouts and Cubs had as their guests the Rev.G.R.Webster (District Commissioner), Capt.E.W. MacKichan (local Association secretary and treasurer), Mrs.C.Smith (badge secretary), Mrs.Miles and Mr.Kirby (2nd Sandhurst Group), Mr.Clayton, Mr. Sandford and P/L Kirby (1st Crowthorne Group).

    After tea, which included a birthday cake, with candles, trifles and jellies made by Sister Daley, the Commissioner for Handicapped Scouts (Mr.A.G.Newton) thanked all concerned, and Sister Daley was presented with a bouquet by Derek Smith. Mr.Webster, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the Group, and paid tribute to Messrs. C.and A.Butcher, Mr.Elston and Mr. Pike, for their work on behalf of the Scouts and Cubs.

    At the cinema show the Heatherwood Girl Guides were the guests of the boys. Every Scout received a gift sent by the 2nd Sandhurst Group. Funds for the party were raised by Crowthorne and Sandhurst Scout Groups, Mrs.Booker, Mrs.Salt (Sunninghill) and the boys themselves.

  • Guides At Hospital Ascot

    Guides At Hospital Ascot and Cranbourne Girl Guides, under Miss Moore, the District Captain, paid a visit to Heatherwood Hospital on Saturday and spent an enjoyable time with the handicapped Guides.

    During their visit they were shown a film of the Guide Rally held at Reading, and enjoyed games and tea, The evening concluded with a camp fire.

  • Boxing Bout in Hospital Ward

    Patients at Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot, which handles long-term surgical tuberculous cases, thrill to an exhibition bout specially staged in their ward.

    The show was put on by Mr. Ted Cates with the willing assistance of the Limehouse and Poplar A.B.A. Boxing Club.

  • Windsor R.D.C.

    The Clerk, Mr.G.W.Allen. said he had written to the North West Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board for information regarding the future of the South Ascot Nursing Home, and the proposed deputation from the Council.

    He suggested to the Board that as four months had elapsed, they were rather discourteous, In their reply the Regional Board. stated that as soon as the opportunity occurred a discussion would be arranged. The chairman said he felt the Board were being careful in arriving at a decision. The letter implied that they were thinking again. The Clerk said that Heatherwood Hospital were using beds not required by the home and the chairman stressed that the Council could not force an interview, but the position would be watched.

    Comment:- The South Ascot nursing home known as the Royal Victoria, was a hot topic for the community in 1949/50, as proposals to merge with Heatherwood caused local indignation at the suggestion. A decision still not reached at this point had prompted further correspondence.

     
  • Easter Brides at Bracknell

    Many members of the staff of the Heatherwood Hospital, where the bride was employed, joined the large congregation at All Saints' Church, Ascot, on Saturday when Miss Joan Audrey Lovegrove only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Lovegrove, of Calgary Cottages, New Road, Ascot, was married to Mr. Charles Elliott, second son of Mrs, and the late Mr. G. Elliott, of 3, Ashby Villas, Wokingham Road, Bracknell.
    The bride, who was given away by her father, wore an ankle-length white sharkskin gown and train, with a headdress of orange blossom, and carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley and other flowers.
    She was attended by two bridesmaids and a page. Miss Daphne Ellis (friend), and Miss Margaret Cotterill (cousin of the bride), were attired in pale mauve figured taffeta with headdresses to match and carried bouquets of mauve tulips and other flowers, The page, Master Richard Cotterill, was dressed in white.
    The choral service was conducted by the Rev. Graham Euston, with Mr. Vernon Cave at the organ, and during the signing of the register the choir sang "The Lord is My Shepherd."
    The bridegroom's brother, Mr. M. Elliott, was best man. After a reception at the Parish Room, which was attended by over 60 guests, the couple left for their honeymoon at Perranporth, (Cornwall), breaking their journey at Exeter, The bride travelled in grey with accessories to match, Their future home will be at Bracknell.

  • Informal Presentation

    The King held an informal presentation on the lawn of the Grand Quadrangle and with the Queen and Princess Margaret talked with the County Commissioners and overseas Scouts. The parade headed by the Band of the Life Guards, who were in full dress then entered at the St.George's Gate and the King took the Salute from a base in the Grand Quadrangle.

    The Royal Party afterwards talked to the handicapped Scouts many of whom were in wheeled chair and amongst whom were two boys from the Heatherwood Hospital at Ascot.

    A parade service at which the address was given by the Dean of Windsor, Bishop Hamilton was afterwards held in St.George's Chapel. After the service the Scouts were addressed! In the Horse Shoe Cloisters by Lord Rowallan, the Chief Scout.

  • Four Heatherwood Scouts

    Heatherwood Hospital Scouts belonging to the Crippled Boy Scout Movement visited Windsor Castle on Sunday for the yearly march past, and inspection by the King. They were under the care of Miss Osborne, sister tutor, and Mr.Newton, both of whom take a keen interest in the movement at the Hospital.

    Afterwards, the boys were taken out to tea in the town. David Tott, aged eight years, one of the boys who has been in Heatherwood Hospital six years, has just had his right leg amputated, and is making good recovery.

  • Officers Re-Elected

    A "Thanks Badge " had been presented to Miss Key, Matron of Heatherwood Hospital, and certificates for "Faithful Service" to Mrs.Blacklaw (late C.H., 1st Sunningdale), Mr.E.Beasley (Instructor, Heatherwood Hospital) and Mr.J.Alton (A.C.M., 1st Crowthorne).

    During the past year 55 Second Class, 11 First Class and seven King's Scout Badges had been awarded, and 36 Cubs had received their 2nd Stars.
    This was the first time that King's Scouts had appeared in the census returns of the Association for many years.

  • St.Dunstan's

    Twenty two collectors took part in a collection on Saturday for St.Dunstan's, organised by Miss E.A.Tilly, of Fernbank Road, Ascot, The total realised was £56 1 6d. Ascot Heath Schools raised £1 98. 8d. and the staff of Heatherwood Hospital, £1 28. 3d.

  • Hospital Social

    Many members and friends of the Heatherwood Hospital Social Club attended a Halloween social and dance at the Hospital on Tuesday. There were games, and novelty and fancy dress dancing. Refreshments, were served.

  • Circus Animals Visit Hospital

    The children of Heatherwood Hospital were thrilled on Thursday, of last week, when some of the staff of Bertram Mills Circus and their animals paid them a visit.

    A llama, camel, and a donkey were among the pets, and rides in a carriage drawn by four shetland ponies on the Hospital lawn were a tremendous attraction.

  • Ascot British Legion Branch Annual Meeting

    Successful Appeal
    The report went on to say that, after rejection by the Pensions Board, a successful appeal had been made for one man to the value of nearly £100. Two cases were being dealt with, and three other appeals had failed.

    Assistance had been given for a visit to a grave in France ex-Service patients at Heatherwood Hospital had received cigarettes, writing pads and pencils,.

  • Hospital Dance

    The Heatherwood Hospital Social Club held a Christmas carnival dance on Tuesday which was attended by the Matron, many members of the staff and friends. The Gay Victorians' Band supplied music.

  • Heatherwood Hospital

    Heatherwood Hospital Christmas celebrations are in full swing.
    On Thursday, and last Friday, Ward 1 senior boys acted a farce in two scenes entitled "Meddling Magic." There were 18 in the cast and some of them acted from their beds, which were especially draped. Others were on "frames" and crutches.

    On Saturday members of Toc H. sponsored a party, and on Monday the school party was held. Father Christmas paid a special visit to the babies' ward, Mrs.Stainer's pupils, of Sunningdale, gave a dancing display and there was a conjuror.

  • Heatherwood Hospital

    Heatherwood Hospital has had an enjoyable round of Christmas celebrations. On Christmas day dinner included turkey and other seasonable fare. fare. On Boxing Day a whist drive was arranged for the patients and a concert was given by the scouts of Earleywood.

    The domestic staff also had a special dinner and on Wednesday the Nurses were similarly entertained. On Thursday the doctors' and Sisters' dinner was held and today (Saturday) Toc H, are giving a concert.

  • TOC H.Party at Heatherwood

    The Mayor and Mayoress of Windsor visited Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot, on Saturday, when the Windsor Toc H. Branch gave a party to the adult patients.

    In a brief speech the Mayor praised the work of the movement and said it was the second time he had attended such a function, Assisted by the Deputy Mayor and the Mayoress, he distributed gifts to each patient, including the contents of food parcels from the Commonwealth.

  • Birthday Heatherwood Hospital Scouts

    The Scout Group celebrated their 24th birthday on Saturday last with a party. Many friends attended, including the District Commissioner (Rev. G.R.Webster), District Secretary and Treasurer (Capt. E.W.MacKichan), Mrs.Smith (Badge Secretary), and members of the Ascot Rotary Club and the Crowthorne, Sandhurst and Sunninghill Scout Groups. The party commenced with "hot dogs," cooked in the ward by the Scouts and served with potato crisps, followed by cakes of all description, sandwiches and trifles.

    A film show was presented and the girls from Ward 2 joined in the celebrations, Mr.A.G.Newton (Assistant County Commissioner) thanked all who had helped to finance the party, especially the Ascot Rotary Club. Mr.Webster presented to Mr.Miles (G.S.M. 1st Sandhurst) the much coveted "Wood Badge."
    The 18 babies of Ward 2, who were unable to join the other children were presented with fruit and sweets from the Rotarians. These were distributed by Mr. and Mrs.H.Bowyer.

  • Heatherwood Hospital Dance

    The Matron and the nursing staff of Heatherwood Hospital invited the specialised staff, including the doctors, and also members of H.M. Forces to a New Year dance at the hospital on Friday last. The Gay Victorians Band, of Windlesham, was in attendance, and supper was served in the nurses' dining room.

    On Wednesday of last week members of the Heatherwood Social Club journeyed by coach to Tom Arnold's Circus at Harringay.

  • Pantomime at Heatherwood Hospital

    Although confined to bed, the children of Heatherwood Orthopaedic Hospital were not denied a pantomime for on Saturday "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was presented to them by the drama section of the Sandhurst Women's Institute.

    For 14 hours they were amused and thrilled and joined with vigour in three cheers for the artistes. The producer was presented with a bouquet by Reg Evans. The cost of the coach for transporting the company was borne by the Committee of the 2nd Sandhurst Scouts.

  • He fell in love with Nurse Love

    What does a patient do when he falls in love with his nurse? That was the problem that beset Mr. John Evans, a patient at the Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot.
    There he met Miss Jessie Marion Love, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. Love, of No. 143, Wellington Buildings, Ebury Bridge Road, Pimlico.
    On Saturday, three years later, Mr. Evans solved the situation. At the little grey stone church of St. Barnabas, Pimlico Road, the couple were married.
    The bride was gowned in white satin and wore coronet headdress of orange blossom, with a long vell. She carried a bouquet of clove carnations.
    The couple are honeymooning in Hove.
    By the way, Mr. Evans is no longer a patient, and no more is Miss Love a nurse.

  • Hospital "Bob Jobs"

    The Matron of Heatherwood Hospital, Miss Howes, collected £3 on Saturday from Scout and Cub patients, earned by the boys during "Bob-a-job Week." Jobs done by the boys, most of whom are bed patients, varied from cleaning Ward silver and oiling trolley wheels to sewing and rolling bandages.

    The Matron told them she was sorry it had not been possible to give them more opportunities to earn "bobs," but they had certainly made the best of all their chances.

  • Tourniquet forgotten, patient died

    A patient who had a tourniquet applied to his leg before an operation did not have it removed until six hours later, became seriously ill and died.
    When the patient, Harvey Charles Harrison (32). bus conductor, of Diamond Road, Slough, mentioned pain he was accused in the hospital ward of cowardice.
    said his wife at the inquest at Burnham yesterday. "Nurse found it" "He told me he was given an injection to keep him quiet," said Mrs. Harrison.
    Dr. G. F. Arden, of Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot, who performed the operation, said: "A tourniquet was applied by the anaesthetist but it was not removed afterwards. It was high up on the leg and covered by towels and the patient's operation gown."
    It was removed by a male nurse who found it when straightening up the bed for Mrs. Harrison's visit.
    A verdict of "Death by mis-adventure" was returned.

  • Patients' Day by the Sea

    Young Heatherwood Hospital patients, whose ages ranged from one year to 16. with the nursing and teaching staffs, were taken by motor coach to Bognor on Saturday, special arrangements made for the youngsters to be put down on the beach by the coach and also to be picked up again for the return journey.

    Many were on crutches and others were unable to walk. A picnic lunch and tea were arranged by the hospital officer.
    The children were given free sea trips.

  • Examination Successes

    Hilary Jackson, senior girl patient of Ward 2 at Heatherwood Hospital, has passed the General Certificate of Education examination. The subjects were English and literature, geography, history, and German. Another patient, Brian Scott, has gained the Teachers Certificate.
    The examinations were held at the Hospital.

  • Berkshire Education Report Extract

    With regard to Heatherwood Hospital Special School the same report stated that, as it is cramped for accommodation, the managers have recommended that a building be erected on the site to provide a workroom and storeroom, and so make it unnecessary for the Authority to continue to rent storage space from the hospital authorities. The estimated cost of building and equipping such a hut is £1,127, for which provision has been made in the estimates of capital expenditure for the current year.

    The Ministry of Education are prepared to grant approval in principle to this proposal, but have advised the Authority that security of tenure should be ensured by arranging for the land to be leased for 21 years. It was recommended that, subject to the concurrence of the Co-ordination Sub-Committee, the County Valuer be asked to negotiate for a lease of the site for 21 years.

  • Boy Scout Notes

    On Sunday, the Curlew Patrol at Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot, Berks, their Patrol watched Leader, Reginald Evans, being presented with the "Cornwell Scout" Badge.

    Although crippled with tuberculosis of the spine he has earned the following tributes to his character.
    His Nursing Sister: "In my long | experience in the care of sick children I have never met a boy who impressed me so much his courage is unfailing. I have never I have never heard him grumble or complain. He is kindness itself and gives his possessions freely. particularly to those who do not have visitors."
    His Scoutmaster: "As P.L. of the 'Curlew Patrol, Reg is thoroughly he is thorough in trustworthy everything he attempts and never fails."
    His Doctor: "In my long association with this boy I have always been impressed by his unfailing cheerfulness and optimism. I have never known him complain once. throughout his long and at times painful illness." *

  • Hospital Stoker For 30 Years

    Halloween Presentation at Heatherwood
    There were special celebrations at Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot, on Halloween Night, last week, during which Mr.W.Bateman, who has retired after 30 years service as stoker, was presented with a watch. The presentation was made on behalf of the staff by the Chief Engineer, Mr.Oliver. Mr. Bateman served in the first World War with the Royal engineers. He is 65 years of age.

    During the evening there was a fancy dress competition, the winner being Sister! Edgar in Chinese costume, with Nurse Gifford second and Sister Cox third.

  • Scout Party

    Scouts and Cubs of Heatherwood Hospital held a celebration party on Saturday in honour of Patrol Leader Reginald Evans, holder; of the Cornwall Badge.
    All the boys, mostly bed patients, were entertained in the recreation room and a good feast was prepared by Sister Cox.

  • Heatherwood Presentation

    Miss E.S.Hoare, assistant matron of Heatherwood Hospital, who is leaving to take up another appointment. was presented with an enamel Scout Supporters' badge by the Scout Group on Saturday.
    The presentation was made by Cornwall Scout Reg Evans, who also handed Miss Hoare a certificate of appreciation of her work bearing the signatures of the Group members. Mr.G.Newton, the Scout master, paid tribute to her work.

  • Ascot Around the Churches

    All Saints' Church, Ascot, was decorated with flowers and holly for Christmas, and a large illuminated tree occupied a prominent position, gifts of toys and books being hung on it. All these gifts will go to boys and girls of Heatherwood Hospital.
    At St. John's Church, Midnight Mass was celebrated in the presence of a large congregation. There was a good attendance for Holy Communion at both churches. At the Baptist Church many gathered for the early celebration of the Ordinance of the Lord's Supper on Christmas Day.

    Ascot - Heatherwood Party
    Christmas celebrations Heatherwood Hospital started on Wednesday of last week with a special party for the babies, juniors and seniors. There was a large decorated Christmas tree and Father Christmas presented gifts to the children in the babies' and junior wards. The seniors were shown films and everyone enjoyed a good tea.

  • Heatherwood Hospital Celebrations

    A party was given on Saturday by Toc H to the children of Heatherwood Hospital. A steam train was taken into the wards and the patients were given rides. Each child received a present.

    On Sunday a special carol service was conducted by the Rev.L.Mills and on Christmas Eve the nursing staff toured the wards singing carols.
    Christmas Day celebrations included a special dinner for the patients.
    On Boxing Day the nurses had their dinner followed by a party and on Thursday the sisters celebrated.
    Yesterday (Friday). the nurses and staff gave a concert.

  • Ascot Heatherwood Scout Troop

    The 25th anniversary of the formation of the Heatherwood Hospital Scout Troop was celebrated by a party in Ward 1 on Saturday.
    Guests joined the Cubs and Scouts at tea and a film show. Mr. L. A. Key, resident medical officer, with the Matron, Miss D. M. Howes, cut an iced cake on which were 25 candles. Mr. A. G. Newton, who is now Assistant County Commissioner for Handicapped Scouts, was the Scoutmaster at Heatherwood from 1927 until he left for war service in 1942.
    The present Scoutmaster is Mr. G. E. Butcher. An album of photographs of scouting activities at the hospital show that great benefit can be derived from scouting by handicapped boys.

  • Disabled Scouts at Windsor

    Seven disabled Scouts from Heatherwood Hospital, three in wheeled chairs, went to Windsor on Sunday to watch the march past of the 1,000 Queen's Scouts who attended the service at St. George's Chapel. Car transport was provided by local people. Two Sisters from the Hospital, with Mr. A. G. Newton and other accompanied the friends Scouts. Accompanied by Lord Row-allan, the Chief Scout, the Queen walked along the ranks and shook hands with each scout. She was followed by Princess Margaret, with whom was Mr. A. W. Hurll, Chief Executive Commissioner, and the Duke of Edinburgh, who was accompanied by Mr. E. G. Neate, County Commissioner for Surrey.
    The Queen then walked over to the corner of the quadrangle, where she spoke to the Disabled Scouts, some of whom were from Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot.

  • Winkfield Parish Council -"Not a bit fair"

    Mrs. R. H. Darwall asked the chairman if he could say what had happened regarding the Royal Victoria Nursing Home, South Ascot.
    She had been told by one of the members that it was now an annexe. to Heatherwood Hospital,
    but some of the local people were receiving help and it was no longer private.
    Mr. C. F. Vaughan said the local people had lost control of it and the chairman remarked: "Call it confiscation if you like, it now belongs to the State".
    Mrs. Darwall commented that "it was not a bit fair".

  • Ascot & District Autumn Show

    The chairman of the Association, Mr. A. H. Bull, stated that it was one of the finest of the Autumn Shows to be staged, the produce being of an extremely high standard.
    The children's writing competition attracted 113 entries, nearly every school in the district taking part.
    A special prize was awarded for the entry of Barbara Copcutt, of Heatherwood Hospital, which was written while lying on her back.

  • Xmas Market at Ascot

    Successful All Saints' Church Effort
    A successful Christmas Market, organised by All Saints' Church, Ascot, was held on Friday and Saturday in the concert hall at Heatherwood Hospital by permission of the Windsor Group Hospital Management Committee. Mrs. L. A. Key, wife of the resident medical officer, declared it open at a short, private ceremony on Friday for stallholders and helpers and was presented with a bouquet of chrysanthemums from June Keel.
    The Market was open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day and a canteen, organised by Lady Prescott, served morning coffee, lunches and teas.
    Friday afternoon Dorothy Elliott presented a mannequin parade in the Ballroom at the Royal Ascot Hotel and on Saturday afternoon the pupils of Miss Dorice Stainer gave a display of dancing. A stall with articles made by the patients in Heatherwood Hospital raised over £50.
    To mark their Centenary Year, the boys of Ascot Heath School had a stall of handicrafts made at the school and a gift stall was organised by the Countess Roberts.
    Parish organisations with other stalls were the Mothers' Union, Young Wives' Fellowship. St. John's Church and the Youth Fellowship.
    The men of the parish had their own stall. A cake stall was run by Miss Stevenson, Miss M. E. Cory had a produce stall, Mrs. Hansard organised the competition stall and Mrs. H. D. Parker a tombola. The local company of Girl Guides had a bran tub.
    Mr. E. Sales auctioned various articles on Saturday evening. Winners of competitions were: Mrs. Waite (turkey), Mrs. Heath (two dozen eggs), Judith Davies, Miss Appleby, Miss Price, Miss Matthews, Mrs. Tolhurst, Mrs. Sturt, Anthony Bowyer, Mrs. Ainsley. Mr. Holloway, Mrs. Grove and the Rev. L. P. Mills. When the market closed on Saturday evening the hon. treasurer, Major C. M. Fyson announced a preliminary figure of £475.

  • Nurse Passes

    Nurse Passes Shirley Merriman (18), Jaughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Merriman, 39, Maiden-street. Cwmfelin, has successfully completed the preliminary part of her nursing training.
    Miss Merriman is now at Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot. She was a pupil at Llwynderw School, Maesteg.
